Buying USB-C Charger Bundles: Approve the Cable as a Separate Item

Build a clear USB-C charger bundle specification covering cable inclusion, power and data requirements, evidence, samples and substitution control.

Make the quoted bundle unambiguous

Two quotations for the same charger wattage can describe different deliveries. One may include a cable, another may price the adapter alone, and a third may include a cable selected only by length. Before comparing unit prices, give the cable its own line in the bundle specification.

For a detachable USB-C to USB-C cable, identify the proposed manufacturer or supplier part number, length, connector arrangement, quantity per kit and packaging arrangement. If the buyer will provide the cable, mark it as buyer-supplied and include that exact assembly in the sample evaluation. Keep the charger and cable identities separate even when they share one retail or distributor SKU.

Separate power, data and application requirements

USB-IF explains that cables have different capabilities and that selecting a certified cable does not increase the capabilities of the connected products. Ask for the proposed cable specification and compare it with the intended charger and equipment combination.

Use separate entries for required power capability, data capability and any display-related application. A buyer sourcing a charging-only kit should say so; a buyer bundling a cable for a dock should provide the additional use requirements. Do not let an unspecified cable become the basis for promising functions that the kit has never been evaluated to support.

For charger output-profile questions, use the companion USB-C PD power profile guide. Here, the purchasing decision is which exact cable belongs in the approved bundle.

Check what the markings and documents actually cover

USB-IF currently requires USB-C to USB-C cables entering its compliance program to carry a 60W or 240W power marking. It also specifies data-rate markings, with an exception for High-Speed USB cables. These are program requirements, not proof that every cable with a printed icon is certified. The official cable and connector page also states that commercial use of USB-IF logos requires its trademark license agreement.

If a supplier claims USB-IF certification, request the identifying information for the exact cable and verify it against the applicable USB-IF records. Match the supplied cable identity and specification to the evidence. Keep this separate from the adapter documentation: evidence for one component does not automatically cover the other or establish approval of the complete bundle.

This article makes no USB-IF certification claim for a Voltivo Power product or cable. Any requested evidence and suitability must be confirmed for the proposed configuration.

Use a bundle approval sheet with separate responsibilities

Charger line
Model, revision, port to be used and required output profiles, linked to the approved charger specification.
Cable line
Exact assembly identity, length, quantity per kit and documented power and data capabilities.
Use case
Target equipment or input requirements, and whether the kit must support charging only or additional functions.
Evidence owner
Who supplies each document, who reviews it, and which open questions must close before release.
Sample identity
Charger and cable sample identifiers, equipment configuration, evaluation date and recorded outcome.

Ask suppliers to return the same sheet with exceptions clearly marked. This allows purchasing to compare what is actually included instead of treating every cable described as USB-C as interchangeable.

Test the delivered combination and control substitutions

Have the equipment engineer define the evaluation and acceptance criteria for the intended use. Test the proposed charger, selected port, final cable and target equipment together. If several cable lengths or equipment variants will be sold, record which combinations have been evaluated and which remain open.

For example, a distributor may offer one charging kit with two cable lengths. This is an illustrative planning scenario. Approval of the first assembly should not silently authorize the second; put both variants on the sheet and identify the evidence supporting each release.

Before placing a repeat order, agree how cable substitutions will be reviewed. Require identification of the replacement assembly and review of the affected specification, evidence and sample results. A similar appearance or unchanged charger model is not a complete purchasing approval.

For a Voltivo Power inquiry, share the charger requirements, target equipment, intended cable use, length, quantity per kit, destination markets and estimated order quantity. Ask for the cable inclusion and proposed assembly to be identified explicitly in the quotation.
