Battery Charger RFQs: Define the Battery Pack Before Comparing Quotes

A procurement checklist for battery pack identity, charging requirements, connector pinouts and sample approval before ordering battery chargers.

Make the battery pack the starting reference

A charger quotation is difficult to compare when the request identifies only a battery voltage and a connector photograph. Start with the exact rechargeable battery pack part number and approved datasheet revision. Ask the pack supplier or responsible engineer to provide the charging requirements, rather than allowing a buyer to infer them from a product label.

For distributors managing replacement parts, maintain a compatibility record for each equipment and battery variant. Similar enclosures do not establish interchangeability. Keep a proposed replacement separate from an approved replacement until the responsible technical team has completed its review.

Clarify what the external unit must do

State whether the requested external unit supplies power to charging electronics inside the equipment, or performs charging control for the pack. Draw the boundary between the external supply, equipment electronics and battery pack in the RFQ. A supplier needs to know which functions belong to the item being quoted.

As a concrete technical example, Texas Instruments describes its BQ25306 charger IC as managing conditioning, constant-current and constant-voltage stages, plus termination and temperature monitoring. Those functions illustrate why a voltage/current rating alone does not describe a charging solution. This is a reference to one IC design, not evidence of the circuitry or features in any Voltivo product.

Request a written responsibility list: who specifies the charge settings, who checks pack compatibility and who approves the complete equipment configuration? Do not treat the presence of a battery-management or protection board as the answer to those questions.

Build a pack-specific purchasing brief

Pack identity
Manufacturer, part number, datasheet revision, chemistry, series/parallel arrangement and capacity.
Approved charging requirements
Pack-supplier-defined charging voltage, current, temperature conditions, termination and any recovery restrictions.
Interface
Mating connector reference, pinout, polarity, cable length and any temperature-sense, identification or communication connection.
System behavior
Whether equipment operates while connected, required indicators and the expected response to pack absence or a reported fault.
Order and market
Destination countries, documentation requested by your compliance reviewer, sample quantity, bulk quantity and delivery target.

Mark unknown fields “to be confirmed” and assign an owner. Do not populate charge limits with common values for a broadly named chemistry. If the pack supplier changes a cell or protection-board revision, ask engineering whether the approved charger pairing needs another review.

Compare quotations against the same approved brief

Ask every supplier to return a compliance-to-requirements list alongside price. Use three clear responses: confirmed, deviation proposed or information required. This keeps an unresolved connector signal or charging behavior visible instead of hiding it in a low unit price.

Separate the sample configuration from optional variants. Label artwork, regional AC connection, cable assembly and packaging should have their own references. For US and Canadian orders, request applicable documentation for the exact proposed configuration and have it reviewed before approval; a catalog category or plug style does not establish certification.

For importers planning repeat purchases, include a change-notification requirement in the purchasing discussion. Record which substitutions need written approval and which sample or document must be updated.

Approve the complete combination before a bulk order

Have the responsible technical team define a sample-review plan against the battery supplier’s requirements. Identify the actual pack, charger, cable and equipment revision used in that review. Request recorded results for the required charging behavior, indication and agreed operating conditions. A quick connection check is not a complete compatibility assessment.

Procurement should collect the approved specification, technical sign-off, sample reference and agreed commercial terms in one order record. Avoid inventing pass limits in the purchasing team; unresolved technical decisions belong with the pack supplier and qualified engineering reviewers.

To discuss a Voltivo Power battery charger inquiry, send the pack datasheet, interface drawing, destination market and estimated quantity. Available charging functions, supported configurations, documents, MOQ, sample availability and lead time are confirmed during review.
