Buying a Multi-Output Power Supply: Send a Load Matrix, Not Just Watts

Describe the load on each output in startup, standby and normal operation so suppliers can review minimum-load and cross-regulation requirements.

Start with the equipment operating modes

When equipment needs several DC rails, a quotation request that lists only a total wattage leaves important questions unanswered. Purchasing needs a way to describe which outputs are loaded together, including when part of the equipment is idle. A load matrix gives the supplier a common reference for that review.

Use one row per operating mode and one column per required output. Ask the equipment engineer to provide the expected current range for each cell. Label measured values, estimates and requirements separately. This guide concerns supplies with multiple DC outputs; it is not a description of USB-C port power sharing.

Why the minimum matters as well as the maximum

TDK-Lambda explains minimum loads and cross-regulation in multi-output supplies. In some designs, maintaining the specified output regulation requires a minimum load on one or more outputs. Loading one channel can also affect the voltage of another. Other designs can avoid minimum-load requirements through different regulation arrangements.

These are design-dependent characteristics. The technical reference explains the principle; it does not establish the behavior of a Voltivo Power product. Request the exact proposed model's current datasheet and the conditions behind its regulation figures. Do not assume that every multi-output supply needs a minimum load, or that none does.

Build a short worksheet before requesting samples

The following is a blank brief to adapt with your engineering team. It deliberately supplies no invented current limits or universal acceptance values.

Output columns
Name each rail and record its required voltage, acceptable voltage range and reference connection.
Operating-mode rows
List startup, standby, normal operation and any equipment mode that changes which circuits are active.
Cell entries
Record the expected minimum and maximum current on that rail in that mode. Mark unknowns for review instead of treating them as zero.
Simultaneous conditions
Identify which combinations can actually occur and which are excluded by the equipment design.
Evidence references
Attach the requirement revision, measurement record or engineering estimate used for each entry.

Also identify outputs that can be unused in a particular product variant. Have the engineer distinguish an intentionally disconnected load from a small but nonzero standby load. Keep the worksheet tied to the equipment variant being quoted.

Ask about combinations, not isolated ratings

Imagine an equipment variant where its controller remains active while an accessory is switched off. In another mode, both are active. These are illustrative review conditions, not catalog specifications. Send both rows to the supplier and ask it to assess the proposed supply against each one.

A response that confirms only the maximum current of each output does not answer the complete worksheet. Ask the supplier to identify any minimum-load conditions, combined-output restrictions and applicable regulation limits, with document references. Where the answer depends on a particular load combination, have it identify that combination explicitly.

If the proposed supply does not cover an intended mode, request an alternative configuration for engineering review. Do not add a dummy load or change the equipment design solely to close a purchasing question without a technical assessment.

Carry the matrix into sample evaluation and ordering

Ask the responsible engineer to define the evaluation plan and acceptance criteria for the operating-mode rows. Purchasing can then track which conditions have supporting evidence, which need sample evaluation and which remain unresolved. Record the tested model and configuration alongside the worksheet revision.

When comparing quotations, keep a separate field for exceptions. A lower price should not hide an unanswered requirement. If the equipment later adds an accessory or changes standby behavior, reopen the affected rows rather than assuming the earlier decision still covers the new use.

For a custom power discussion with Voltivo Power, include your output requirements, load matrix, installation constraints, destination markets and expected quantity. Multi-output availability and performance must be confirmed for the proposed configuration; the linked catalog categories are starting points for a discussion, not a promise that every model provides multiple rails.
