Buying Dimmable LED Drivers: Specify the Controller and the Low End
Build an LED driver RFQ around the actual controller, LED load, minimum brightness and off behavior, then approve the complete combination.
Buy an approved combination, not just a dimmable label
A quotation that says dimmable leaves several purchasing decisions unresolved. Which controller will be used? Which LED assembly will it drive? How low must the light go, and what should happen when the user selects off?
For a lighting brand, distributor or equipment team, the useful approval unit is the proposed driver, controller and LED load together. Give each component an exact identity in the RFQ. If one component has not been selected, identify that gap and ask for a proposal rather than treating compatibility as already established.
Separate the control input from the LED output
MEAN WELL's application FAQ explains that dimming selection depends on whether the LED load uses constant-current or constant-voltage operation. It also describes different control methods used by its dimmable products. These examples underline why a control-interface name alone is not a complete system specification.
First document the LED load and its required output mode. Then identify the controller manufacturer, model and interface, with its current datasheet. Ask the driver supplier to confirm the proposed combination and return the applicable connection instructions. Do not assume that a dimming control signal and the waveform delivered to the LEDs are the same thing.
For the initial load decision, see our constant-voltage versus constant-current buying guide. This article adds the controller and user-experience requirements to that electrical specification.
Define minimum light and off behavior separately
Ask for the specified minimum dimming level and how it is defined. A percentage of output current, a control setting and a measured light level should not be treated as interchangeable acceptance criteria. Have the lighting engineer define the quantity and measurement method that matter for the finished product.
Write a separate requirement for the off command. Ask whether the proposed combination supports the required off behavior, whether any additional switching is needed and what happens when power returns. Request model-specific evidence rather than assuming that all products using the same interface name behave alike.
An illustrative cabinet-lighting project might need a stable night-light setting and a distinct off state. This is a planning example, not a claim about any Voltivo product. Purchasing should record both requirements so a supplier cannot satisfy the first while leaving the second unanswered.
Use a short compatibility sheet
- LED assembly
- Part number, output mode, operating requirements and the smallest and largest intended load configurations.
- Controller
- Manufacturer, exact model, interface documentation and intended number of drivers per control group. Ask the supplier to confirm the supported group arrangement.
- Driver proposal
- Exact model and option code, relevant datasheet revision, connection instructions and any required accessories.
- Required behavior
- Minimum light criterion, adjustment range, transition behavior, off command and power-restoration behavior.
- Evidence and exceptions
- Supplier compatibility statement, proposed evaluation method and a named owner for every unresolved requirement.
Send the same sheet to each bidder. An unconfirmed controller or an unspecified load range is a quotation exception, not an automatic match.
Approve the complete sample before ordering a range
Have a qualified engineer define and perform the evaluation using the intended controller, driver and LED assembly. Record the sample identifiers, wiring arrangement, load configuration, input conditions and agreed pass criteria. Include the low end, adjustment through the range, off command and power restoration in the evaluation plan.
Where flicker, camera performance or audible noise matters, state a project-specific criterion and an appropriate measurement method. A brief visual inspection should not be presented as proof of compliance with an unspecified standard.
If several controller models or LED lengths will be sold, keep a compatibility matrix showing which combinations passed, which failed and which remain untested. Do not extend one successful sample result to the whole range without supporting review. Use the sample approval and change-control process to keep later substitutions tied to the accepted configuration.
For a Voltivo Power inquiry, send the LED load information, controller datasheet, dimming and off requirements, installation constraints, destination markets and estimated quantity. Ask which configuration can be proposed and what evidence is available. Dimming capability and compatibility must be confirmed for the exact offer; this guide does not establish them for every product in the catalog.
